English

Hello. My name is Cheryl Wyatt. I am an English teacher at Browerville High School. This includes junior high, high school, and college level courses. It also includes reading courses. I graduated from St. Cloud State University with first my bachelor's degree and then my master's degree, English. Most recently, I attended Minnesota State University, Mankato, and earned a master's degree in literacy education/reading. I love reading. I love learning. I hope to share that with your children.

Weekly Homework
Reading Days: Reading days occur on Wednesdays. Comp and English 9 students are welcome to bring in something to eat and drink. English 8 students can earn "Read and Feeds." This means they are able to bring something to eat or drink depending on behavior, homework having been turned in, etc. The Intro to Lit class students do not have a set reading day. The reading class reads most days, so they do not have a set day, either. Journal: All students are required to have a journal; while English 8, 9, and 10 students will have a journal in the classroom, college classes will keep a journal in a folder to be submitted electronically at the end of each quarter. These are used for a variety of purposes: grammar work, lit responses, reading strategies, writing prompts, etc. Journals are graded at the end of each quarter. Vocabulary: While all students may have vocabulary associated with different units, Comp I and Comp II have daily vocabulary, vocabulary reviews, and vocabulary quizzes. In addition, reading students may be required to work on recognizing unknown words and defining those words in their journals. Unit Work: Comp, Intro to Lit, and English 9 students receive their assignments as we work on various units of study. The units are outlined in the syllabi. English 8 work on units mainly on Mondays and Tuesdays, with reading days on Wednesdays, spelling on Thursdays, and grammar work on Fridays. Second semester, English 10 students will read To Kill a Mockingbird or Spite Fences. This is a paired novel unit. Sticky-Note Books: Comp I and Comp II students are required to complete sticky-note books -- one per quarter. This process encourages close reading, critical thinking, and using multiple reading strategies. As students head to college, it is important that they be able to read and write critically. |
Materials Required for Class
Journal (to be left in the classroom - English 8, 9, and 10) Notebook Pens/pencils Independent reading book NOTE: Typically, I offer students extra credit points once or twice a year for bringing a box of tissue in for use in the classroom. This is not required, but it does help. |
Upcoming events/Important information
English 8 students will be reading, researching, and learning about the Holocaust. Some of the images they choose will be graphic in nature. Students are able to choose which images they will use and will be able to stay away from those that are disturbing. Ms. Wyatt |
