Bienvenidos,to my Spanish classes at Browerville High School. My name is Ben
Evenson and I am beginning my first year of teaching this year. I love hunting, fishing, camping, playing basketball, spending time with my friends and family, and traveling. I am originally from St. Joseph, Minnesota and come from a family of five. I received my BA in Hispanic Studies and my Spanish teaching license from St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota. During my time at St. John's I had the opportunity to study abroad in Viña del Mar, Chile for six months at the University of Adolfo Ibanez. I was able to live with a host family there and I traveled the country of Chile extensively. I look forward to sharing my time and knowledge with your students.
Spanish 1- In Spanish one this year we will be covering a wide variety of material while utilizing our Juntos Uno textbook. The textbook will be serving as a structural guide for this course but a great deal of activities will be formulated on my own. One extremely important question that I will be asking students is to define Latin America and the Spanish language. The definitions may seem simple at first but I hope to delve into a deeper cultural understanding by having students think about this question as our year progresses. Some of the topics that I hope to cover this year are Greetings, telling time, talking about weather and what to wear in certain cases, transportation, the city, food, how to ask for food in a restaurant, how to ask and form questions, the present tense verb formation, the present progressive verb formation, and much more.
Spanish 2- In Spanish two this year we will also be covering a wide variety of material but at a more difficult level than Spanish one. This course will begin with a general review to gauge the retention rate of Spanish of my students. In this course I will also be asking my students to define what Latin America is and what the Spanish language is. The students will grow in knowledge throughout the year of what truly makes up the Spanish and Latino Culture. At the end of the year I will pose the same questions as part of the final exam to see how answers differ. In Spanish two Juntos Uno will also be the guide for curriculum with a great deal of my own personal activities and knowledge added on. Some of the topics that we will cover in Spanish two are review of Spanish one material, higher level vocabulary, giving advice, stem changing verbs, saber vs conocer, command verb forms (both formal and informal), the subjunctive tense, Direct object pronouns, Indirect object pronouns, Preterite and Imperfect Verb tenses, Irregular Verb conjugations in both past and present tense, Past Perfect tense, and the Future Verb tense.
